My first experience with a one to one
If it never fits into a workshop
I have often searched the internet for a workshop that suits me. I looked for either landscape photography or black and white photography and found a few workshops. The problem is usually the distance (it's not exactly easy / cheap to travel from Northern Norway) or the time (I work shifts with weekends etc. and also have a small family). What are the alternatives?
A friend of mine in England offers one to one but then again there is the long journey, mostly over 2 days because the last flight leaves before I arrive... However, I then saw that one of my favorite photographers also offers one to one,
Trym Ivar Bergsmoe.
Planning & Contact
First I thought about what I would like to learn, what I would like to improve and what I can change in my workflow. One is theory and the other practical. I then contacted Trym Ivar Bergsmoe and described what I expected from a one to one and we then made a plan together.
1st step
Trym Ivar Bergsmoe showed me a powerpoint presentation and went through it systematically with me. No question I asked was too stupid and I recognized some aspects that I hadn't considered / used in my photography until then. Since the examples were from my immediate surroundings, I was already able to find places in my head where I could use these techniques.
In the end we found a day where we want to meet in Harstad. Until then, I should see if I can find the points mentioned in my photo archive and try them out while taking photos.
The meeting to take photos
We then met and went through everything again over a cup of coffee before we left to take pictures. It was very interesting to talk to Trym Ivar Bergsmoe about landscape photography.
We then drove to a place where we trained different techniques at a spot. Actually the same place but used different angles of incidence, perspectives and formats to create a small story in the end. It was impressive to see how a few mm up or down made a big difference.
Not that I've tried it before, but the difference was the way I did it both earlier and there and there.
Time flew by and at the end of the trip I was very happy and I went home with a lot of inspiration
Post-processing & Thoughts
We broke up on the day of photography with the appointment for a new zoom meeting. Until then, I should edit my favorites from today's pictures and take a few more photos. I then tried to take a few more photos and sent them to him shortly before the meeting. We then discussed them in a zoom meeting. Here I got some tips and creative suggestions.
That's what helps me and what maybe creates that certain something in the picture!
We stay in contact
Now it's time to take nicer photos, get more creative and use the tools I've been given until the end of the year.
Then we will find another day where we will discuss a selection of images.
I am looking forward to it!
(I hope that at some point it will also be suitable for a workshop with Trym Ivar Bergsmoe)
